Meditation Techniques - NeuroHarmonic Meditations

NeuroHarmonic Meditations use 12 different methods to help you reach a deep Theta meditation. Each of these methods is effective for reaching a meditative state, but together they work in harmony to produce a synergetic effect.

Each of the NeuroHarmonic Meditation Programs come with two tracks, one with Binaural Beats (headphones required), and one track with Isochronic Tones (headphones not required). Both tracks contain the same guided meditation, but use different tones and music. Some people prefer one method over the other, and some people like to alternate between the two.
binaural beats
1 Binaural Beats Binaural beats were discovered in 1839 by a German  experimenter, H. W. Dove.

Binaural Beats require headphones to create brainwave entrainment. Two different frequencies are played through headphones one in each ear. The difference between the two frequencies creates a pulse or "beat". Your brainwaves will then entrain to that beat.
NeuroHarmonic meditations use a binaural beat just above 4 hz for a deep Theta entrainment.

Binaural beats are used on track 1 of each of the NeuroHarmonic Meditation programs.
2 Pulse Modulated Waves - Entrain the brainwaves to 4 Hz theta by modulating the Earth Year Frequency (see below) through a synthesizer ADSR envelope filter. Pulse modulated Waves (also known as Isochronic tones) don’t require headphones and can be played through any stereo speakers. Of course, they can be played through headphones if you wish, but headphones are not required.

Pulse Modulated waves are used on track 2 of each NeuroHarmonic Meditation.

3 "Earth Year" Frequency - This ancient frequency was re-discovered by French mathematician Hans Cousto. He wrote about it in his book "The Cosmic Octave".

A Siderial Year is 1 revolution of the earth around the sun - 365.256 days, or 365 days, 6 hours, 9 min, 9.7676 seconds.

To enable us to hear the Earth Year pitch, we will raise it by using octaves.

Take any musical note (say the "A" above middle C, at 440 cycles per second) and double the pitch and you have raised that note by an octave. It is still the same note name, in this case, it is still an "A", only higher pitched at a frequency of 880 cycles per second.

If we raised this pitch 32 octaves (i.e., doubled the frequency 32 times) it would now be in the range of human hearing. This new frequency is 136.10 Hz. You will not hear this frequency in most modern music, as it falls between C and C#.

This frequency is excellent for meditating and is used on the NeuroHarmonic Meditation recordings as well as the “Wheel of the Year” CD.

According to Cousto, indigenous peoples all over the world chant or tune instruments to this tone. Cousto says that the Earth Year tone is often used as the "drone" or continuous note played behind meditative Indian ragas, and is sometimes called the "Om" or primordial tone. He also wrote that the meditation bells of Tibetan Monks are sometimes tuned to this frequency.

I had some doubts of these claims after reading Cousto's book, but discovered it to be apparently true. I own an inexpensive handmade South American wooden flute, that happens to be perfectly in tune with the Earth Year. I played it on the song Beltane on my Wheel of the Year CD. Of course, the tuning of that flute could just be coincidence, but I decided to use the Earth Year as the tuning of the NeuroHarmonic Meditation Series, and as the "center" frequency of the Binaural Beats.
4 Pythagorean Tuning - Also known as Pure Tuning or Just Intonation. The music on the NeuroHarmonic Meditation series is not tuned to the normal western “even tempered scale” (which is actually slightly out of tune to allow playing in different keys). Instead, the ancient Pythagorean intonation is used, as this is mathematically in perfect tune. This makes the music extremely pleasant to our brains.

5 Progressive Relaxation- A stress management technique first developed by Edmund Jacobson in the early 1920s. It involves alternately tensing and relaxing the muscles and remains in wide use by modern physical therapists.

6 Autogenic Training - a relaxation technique developed by the German psychiatrist Johannes Schultz and first published in 1932 that uses visualisations to induce a state of relaxation. Typical sessions isolate body parts one by one and induce commands such as "your legs are heavy and warm", or "your hearbeat is calm". This technique is still used safely and effectively by clinicians.

7 Alpha induction- proprietary method that helps you quickly reach alpha state on your way to a deeper Theta state.

8 Complete cleansing breath. Simple, but effective technique often used in Yoga and meditation practices.

9 Guided Imagery composed in meditative state. Familiar, gentle, peaceful images allow you to “paint” a landscape... in your mind.

10 Music recorded & composed in meditative state. The music on the NeuroHarmonic Meditations has been described as “comfortable and cozy... like a warm fuzzy blanket wrapped around you”.

The music was all performed while in a meditative state. If I slipped out of that state, we would start the recording over again. The resulting music is a very powerful and is an important element of the NeuroHarmonic Meditation series.

11 Musical timbres chosen for relaxation response.
I recorded this music in a state of meditation. If any sounds, tones, or musical phrases were distracting or pulled me out of the meditative state, the recording was stopped, the offending notes or sounds were erased, and we started over. It was a time consuming process, but I think you'll agree it was well worth it.

12 Specific Tempos and Rhythms for brain entrainment into a theta state. All of the aspects of the music: i.e., tempo (60 bpm), rhythms, sub rhythms, even the length of the reverb and delay effects are all precisely calculated to work together harmoniously. I would venture to say that no other meditation recordings take this amount of care to get all of the musical components to act synergistically... in other words, the whole is bigger than the sum of the parts.

What are Alpha, Beta, Delta and Theta Brainwaves?
These are the four naturally occurring frequencies of the brain (often called brainwaves) as recorded by an electroencephalogram (EEG). These frequencies are measured in cycles per second or Hertz (hz).

People naturally go through all four levels (Alpha, Beta, Theta, and Delta) every day. These states of mind are all natural and necessary to be healthy.

Many scientists believe that modern day men and women spend too much time in Beta, and not enough in Alpha and Theta. Over 60 years of research indicates that spending more time in Alpha could calm the mind and promote healing. Theta brain waves have been linked with accelerated learning, creative problem-solving, vivid visualizing, and memory recall.

Beta (14-20 hz.) is your normal every-day waking state. Beta is primarily left-brain (language oriented) activity. It is good for doing math, reading, working and other tasks. Unfortunately, when you are stressed, worried, or anxious you are also in beta.

Alpha (7-14 hz.) is a relaxed awake state. Many people reach alpha by closing their eyes and just relaxing.

Alpha is right-brain, visual as opposed to verbal. If you start talking to yourself in your head, you pop back into beta. You are also in alpha when you are directly experiencing something and not internally verbalizing or labeling. Children do this more than adults.
When in Alpha, your mind is clear and at peace. Mind and body work together for natural healing.

Theta (4-7 hz.) is that mysterious level (the hypnogogic state) that most people only experience for a brief time before drifting off to sleep or before fully waking up.
If you can consciously stay in Theta, your mind can produce vivid imagery and visions, learn faster, recall “forgotten” memories, and do many other useful things. For this reason, theta frequencies are used in most of the NeuroHarmonic Meditations.

Delta (0.5-4 hz.) is the level of sleep.
